We absolutely loved this vacation. It stands out to us as none other so far. Our favorite. Not only for being in paradise. Which the boys now know what paradise is. They loved it all. But being there with our family. Seeing such beauty together, playing together in such a warm happy place, eating new foods, a new laid back way of life, hiking a new adventure as a family, seeing famous places like Pearl Harbor, the PCC, surfers, local music, flip flops, swim suit rashes, (like rubbing raw and limping around - poor boys) lush green, big rain that we don't see in Utah, Palm trees, green mountains, souvenir shopping, rinsing sand off at the water faucets everywhere, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, tons of pictures, all the smiles and joy on all of our faces, laughing in delight, a little fighting, watching the boys be friends together, Greg showing them a good time, me relaxing and watching all my babies have the time of their lives. That's what our Hawaiian paradise was.
-Wednesday the 14th -
Happy Valentine's day to us! We woke up at like 4am to roll out of bed and get to the airport for our 6am flight to LAX, then on to Honolulu. I feel bad having the boys miss V-day at school, but I think they were ok doing this vacation instead. Ha!
We were a little worried about the weather our whole trip. It kept saying it was going to rain and rain. But, it was't like that. It was kinda drizzly the day we arrived and then Saturday night it poured and a little rain on Sunday. So it didn't ruin plans or rain us out, and we had plenty of sunny beach days. So we were so grateful.
We stayed right in Waikiki at the Aston Sunset Hotel. 2 blocks from the beach. After we arrived at 12 noonish we did the stadium flea market and grabbed some groceries and lunch then headed to the hotel. The boys immediately wanted to hit the pool, so we tried but it was cold. So they bagged that. Then walked to see the sunset on the beach and get some dinner that night. It was so nice to be in the warm humid Hawaiian air. The boys were so excited getting off the plane and seeing the tropical trees at the outdoor airport walkways. The boys sure loved the flights, no complaining and lots of movies on their own screen, plenty of drinks, they thought it was great.
-Thursday in the morning we headed out. We stopped at the Dole Plantation see it and try a Dole Whip ice cream. Delish! Those silly boys holding each others bums as they walk and laugh. (eyeroll)
We stopped at a few of the many food trucks in Haleiwa to get some lunch before spending the afternoon at Waimea Bay Beach. Creed loved all the shrimp on this trip.
Nice big waves the boys loved it! Greg built a sand castle at every beach we did, but the tide there was different in the afternoon and we always built it too high up on the beach for them to defend from the waves like we always do in California. But they still had fun building.
We bought some boogie boards and someone gave us their boards and chairs and umbrella so we had those to use the rest of the trip.
The bottom left pic Greg is being a piece of drift wood. Rolling around being moved and crashed by the waves, the boys loved it.
So many fun pictures. I couldn't just select a few to share. So this post will be lengthy. It was such a wonderful vacation. We all still talk about it and all loved it so much. Everything about it. Just look at the fun and joy everyone was having. The water was so warm too.
In the late afternoon we dragged the boys away from that beach, then we stopped by Shark Cove and the older boys did some quick snorkeling. The little boys and I tried wading in the water but too many rocks so we watched from above.
Then we drove to Bonzai Pipeline (Sunset Beach) Beach and watched the sunset and all the surfers in the giant waves. Lots of entertainment and ooohs, ohhhhs, and woes. After the sun was gone we grabbed some Loco Moco dinner and headed back to the hotel.
A nice lady from Idaho sneaked a picture of us from behind because she thought it was cute with us all lined up with the boys. She introduced herself, sent us a copy of the pic and then we had her take a few with our camera. There we are. This is us! (I love that TV show, that's why I said it.) And Creed may or may not be going commando with nothing on underneath. :)
-Friday morning. The window from our bed. We kept the curtains open all night so we could see the morning sunrises and enjoy the view from our bed. We brought some air mattresses for Bo and Jax while Creed and Rafe shared the hide-a-bed. Greg and I had the bedroom of course. We were on the 31st floor with incredible views of the ocean and Diamond Head.
We tried going to Hanauma Bay at 9am. But it was a full and closed parking lot. So we headed north and stopped by Valley of the Temples. And then drove to a few beaches on the west side. Like Kailua, but that was too calm and not much in the waves happening so we kept driving. And stopped at our new favorite beach Waimanalo Beach.

Gosh, the white sand, bright blue water, the mountain back drop. And the waves were a little smaller than the north shore so the all the boys could play. Creed never left the ocean this day. Bodie and Rafe could safely try boogie boarding and they all just loved it. We all went out and played jumping through the waves. Bodie and Rafe wanted to so badly but were too small. So Greg and I had to hold them and jump with them. I couldn't really jump high enough holding Rafe, so I had to hand him off to Greg so we wouldn't drown. Ha! But it was so fun for them to be out there. Greg showed them all how to play "Jumpa" or jumper (saying that as they did it) as they jump through the waves. So that's what Creed was doing for hours. Jax would come and go, but he liked the sand castle building the best.
I love the middle picture of Greg and Rafe getting slammed by a wave. They survived. LOL.
Saturday - We pulled the kids out of bed. By now they were getting used to the time difference and were worn out so they liked to sleep in. But we had a busy day ahead. We drove to Pearl City and parked to do a hike. The Waimano Falls and pools hike. It was steep in parts, and we had to hold ropes, climb boulders and over rocks and trees. It was fun to hike along the actual Hawaiian jungle. There was plenty of shade, and we luckily kept to the correct path and finally made it the lower waterfall.
There was a rope to climb and the water was sure cold. Everyone but Bodie and I went in. Bodie was in a bad mood from the hiking and climbing. There were mosquitoes. And boy they liked Creed. He got eaten alive. Seriously like 20 bites. All over his back and legs. I sprayed bug spray on everyone but Creed still got it.We quickly peeked on our way out to see the bigger upper fall too.
In the pics, Creed helping Rafe into the pool, and Jax carrying Bodie towards the end of the trail to the car. They were so good and helpful and love each other. - Between all the fights and arguments of course. :)
We got some lunch and ran back to the hotel to shower and get the mud off to hurry and drive up to Laie to see the temple and go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. It was just starting to rain as we pulled into the temple and someone was waiting for us to get us our tickets to the PCC so we had to literally run from the car to touch the temple and snap a picture then back.
It really started coming down as we parked the car at the PCC around 2:30pm. And we got our ponchos and umbrella's and had to use them on and off the rest of the day/evening. Even though it was raining, it wasn't too bad with our poncho's. And it's a warm rain. Better than baking in the hot sun I guess. We were able to hit all the village shows, but no time for any activities. We had dinner at one of the Luau's. The boys were asked to go up and dance. Rafe wasn't happy about that. Ha! It was a complete down pour so they didn't use the stage too much. Some of the dancers were in the rain, poor collage students. And then we saw the nightly show and walked to our car in a river of a parking lot to hurry and beat the traffic back to Waikiki. We heard they closed the road that night after we left sometime. Phew. The boys all enjoyed the PCC. They all wanted and wished we could have done some of the activities. But they can save those for next time, right? And they liked drinking the juice from the fresh coconut and then eating the meat from it. That was cool to try.

-Sunday - in the morning we got some vacation church clothes on and went to a church ward up by the Punch Bowl Cemetery. We met up with Aunt Julie and Uncle Ramon Beck for church and then stopped at the cemetery with them. Ramon told some war stories of his dad and walked around and visited then we said goodbye to them and grabbed some lunch and went to Pearl Harbor. We were super bummed we couldn't take the boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial - there was a storm and lighting or something so they don't run the boats. But the boys enjoyed the video and we wandered and saw some ships and submarines. The wanted to go into the submarine museum but the line was long and tickets were gone.
So back to our hotel to relax and then the power went out. Wha!? The dark picture below. We were getting hungry. So we walked down 31 flights of stairs. Yeah, 31, that was fun. Not! Ha! What an experience. We drove to the shopping center/mall for dinner and by the time we got back the power was back on. Thank goodness! We did not want to climb 31 stories of stairs.
And get this, Julie and Ramon happened to be staying at the hotel kitty corner from ours and they too were on the 31st floor. Crazy small world!
While we were in Hawaii the winter Olympics were happening. So we'd only watch a few minutes every night. But man, we normally love watching them and feel sad we missed so much of it this year.
- Our Monday was up in the air on what we were going to do. It was depending on the rain. And we woke up early and saw it was sunny and not cloudy. Aunt Julie invited us to the Army Base on the west side because they have some nice beaches to try. So they came with us for the morning. We went to Pyramid Beach there. It was nice. The waves were big and lots of them. Surfers, were out and the waves were piling in one after another. In the lower right picture you can see 4 stacked wave breaks at once. Like I said, they just kept coming. The water was too wild for the little boys to play in, so they just did the shore with their boards. It was nice and empty there at the base.

We all had lunch together at the golf course club house. It was nice running into family while we were there. Fun to visit with the Becks. They are so great! For the afternoon we thought we'd try either Haunama Bay or hike Diamond Head. Greg wanted snorkeling I wanted the hike. But Haunama came first on the road back, so that's what we did. It was pretty, but it was afternoon, I'm sure the fish were sparse and it was crowded still. The boys said they liked shark cove better, they saw more fish there. And then Creed lost his googles so Jax went out just a little by himself. So that ended and we drove back to Waikiki. But not before making friends with a surfer dude on a motorcycle that the boys kept waving to at every stop light on the way back.
Grabbed dinner and dessert at the grocery store and showered and packed up for the next morning to catch our flight back home to cold snowy Salt Lake. We sure enjoyed our sunset back drop while eating that night.
Hawaii is unlike any place on earth. That's what Greg and I say. It is truly our favorite. We've been several times and want to go back. We've been all over, to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Mexico, Australia, Philippines, lots of nice tropical places, Cali, Florida. But, nothing ever quite compares to Hawaii. In our opinion.
